Why Mr. Carvalho is angry?

Right issue but wrong time

Indian Hockey players won Asia Cup. Indian Cricket players won Twenty-20 world cup. And few days back Indian soccer players clinched the Nehru Cup. Three different sports, three different tournaments at different venues but common thing is that India is the winner.

Hockey and Soccer tournaments were held in India and Twenty-20 tournament was concluded in South Africa. In Twenty-20 total 12 countries participated. All the giants including Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and New Zealand were there and India won all the matches in tournament except one against NZ in Super Eight. Victory against South Africa, Australia and Pakistan was perfect example of Team Work.

In Asia cup hockey also India won all the seven matches they played. But winning was not the only positive outcome of the tournament. Indians struck 57 goals and accepted just five in tournament. They beat strong teams like South Korea and Japan in Semis.

Though situation was different in Nehru Cup, credit should certainly go to Indians for their victory. Only five teams were participated in it. Syria and Kirgizistan were two teams in tournament which had better performance than India in past. Other two teams, which played, were Bangladesh and Cambodia. In tournament India lost to only Syria in league match but took revenge after winning final against Syria by 1-0.

This is the performance of three different Indian teams, which participated in three different tournaments. After all win is win and nothing is better than success. But still there is controversy after grand reception that was given to Indian Cricket team in Mumbai.

Indian hockey team coach Jockim Carvalho was angry about the Red Carpet treatment given to Indian Cricket team by state Government and Board of Cricket Control of India. First of all we have to accept that though Hockey is National Sports of India Cricket is the only popular sports in India. That’s why people, media and sponsors are behind cricket. Till few years back our Hockey team had no sponsor. After that Castrol Oils came forward and sponsored the team.

Second thing is that if BCCI has welcomed the team and people have turn up to streets in huge numbers to welcome the team then why Mr. Carvalho is upset. It is the fact that Central and State governments are not appreciating victory of sports persons other than cricket. Cricketers are not dependent on government. They are earning lot from sponsors and advertisements. But this is not the thing for other sports. They have to depend a lot on aid by state and central governments.

I recall one incident of Indian archer Chakrovelu. She lives in northeast. She had to wait for more than two years to receive amount of just Two Lac. She fought against red tapism of government. After taking issue in court of central sports minister she got justice but only after two years. This is just an example of how other sports and sports persons are treated in India.

So the point, which Mr. Carvalho has raised, is not wrong but the time, which he selected, is wrong. He should have raised the issue just after Asia Cup victory. Because none can understand the situation of these winners except they raise voice. Unless you raise voice or fight you wont get anything in this country. This is the condition of sports in India.

Hockey players have done extremely well in Asia Cup. Soccer players took tremendous efforts to win Nehru Cup trophy. It is the thing with cricketers also. So government should also treat every sport with same yardstick.

I have heard live interview of Carvalho on Times Now channel. He congratulated Indian team for World Cup victory and said that he was never angry about the grand reception of cricketers. He also asked the various state and Central government to stop giving stepmotherly treatment to sports other than cricket. He never commented that our victory is more prestigious or more meaningful than cricket. He was angry with politicians and not with cricketers and cricket fans. This is the perfect stand by Carvalho. But still question remains that is this the right time to raise this question?

चक दे इंडिया...

जोशपूर्ण खेळाचे वेगवान सादरीकरण

"एकदा पाहिल्यानंतर वारंवार पाहण्याची इच्छा होणारा चित्रपट.' "चक दे इंडिया' या चित्रपटाचं परीक्षण करण्यास सांगितलं तर ते एका वाक्‍यात अशाप्रकारे करता येईल. हॉकी या अत्यंत वेगवान व जोशपूर्ण खेळावर आधारित हा चित्रपटही तितकाच वेगवान आणि जोशाने भरलेला आहे. एकदम वरच्या दर्जाचे संवाद आहेत. इतकेच नव्हे तर संघबांधणीपासून ते विजेतेपदापर्यंतच्या प्रवासापर्यंतचे अनेक प्रसंग खूपच उद्‌बोधक आहेत.

प्रसिद्धीमाध्यमे, सरकार, प्रायोजक व प्रेक्षक या चौकडीकडून भारतात हॉकीला किंवा अधिक स्पष्टपणे बोलायचं झालं तर महिला हॉकीला जी वागणूक मिळते, त्याचं यथार्थ चित्रण चित्रपटात करण्यता आलं आहे. सुदैवानं महिला हॉकीवरील चित्रपटाला मिळणारा विलक्षण प्रतिसाद पाहून भारावून जायला होतं. गल्लाभरु चित्रपटांची निर्मिती करण्यापेक्षाही काही जण वेगळा प्रयत्न करताना दिसतात आणि त्याला प्रेक्षकही उत्स्फूर्त प्रतिक्रिया व्यक्त करतात, हे खूपच आनंददायी आहे.

मीररंजन नेगी यांच्या आयुष्यात घडलेल्या घटनांचे सादरीकरण चित्रपटात करण्यात आले आहे. 1982 च्या आशियाई स्पर्धेच्या वेळी नेगी हे भारताचे गोलरक्षक होते. "पेनल्टी शूटआऊट'मध्ये भारत पाकिस्तानकडून पराभूत होतो व त्याचं खापर नेगी यांच्यावर फुटतं. त्यांनी पाकिस्तानकडून पैसे खाल्ले आणि गोल अडविले नाही, असंही म्हटलं जातं. त्यांची कारकिर्द संपते. पुढे हेच नेगी 1998 साली भारताने जिंकलेल्या आशियाई सुवर्णपदकाचे खरे मानकरी ठरतात. 98 साली धनराज पिल्लेच्या नेतृत्त्वाखाली भारत बॅंकॉकला गेला होता. त्यावेळी नेगी हे भारताचे गोलरक्षण प्रशिक्षक होते. तेव्हा सुबय्या नामक गोलरक्षक संघात हवा, हा धनराजचा आग्रह होता. पण नेगी यांनी आशिष बल्लाळच कसा योग्य आहे, हे धनराजला पटवून दिले. अखेरीस सुबय्याऐवजी बल्लाळ मैदानात उतरला आणि दक्षिण कोरियाविरुद्धच्या सामन्यात "पेनल्टी शूटआऊट'मध्ये बल्लाळनेच भारताला तारले व नेगी यांचा निर्णय सार्थ ठरविला. हेच नेगी 2002 मधील राष्ट्रकुल स्पर्धेसाठी महिला हॉकी संघाचे प्रशिक्षक बनले. त्या संघाने सुवर्णपदक जिंकण्याची कामगिरी करुन नेगी यांच्या शिरपेचात मानाचा आणखी एक तुरा रोवला.

"चक दे इंडिया'मध्ये त्याच मीररंजन नेगींची चित्तरकथा काहीशी नाट्यमय स्वरुपात दाखविण्यात आली आहे. पाकिस्तानविरुद्धच्या सामन्यात "पेनल्टी स्ट्रोक'वर गोल न करता आल्याने कबीर खानची कारकिर्द संपुष्टात येते. एकतर पाकिस्तानविरुद्धच्या सामन्यात पराभव आणि त्यातूनही कबीर खान मुसलमान. त्यामुळे भारताच्या सर्वोत्तम "सेंटर फॉरवर्ड' कबीरला "गद्दार' ही पदवी बहाल करण्यात येते आणि तेथेच त्याची कारकिर्द संपते.

तब्बल सात वर्षे अपमान आणि अवहेलना सहन केल्यानंतर विश्‍वकरंडक स्पर्धेसाठी महिलांच्या हॉकी संघाचा प्रशिक्षक बनण्यासाठी तो हॉकी महासंघाच्या कार्यालयात अवतरतो. नाराजीनेच त्याला हॉकी संघाचे प्रशिक्षक करण्यात येते. तेव्हापासून सुरु होते एका खडतर पण आश्‍वासक प्रवासाची सुरवात. भारतात अजूनही खेळ म्हणजे फक्त "टाईमपास' हे गणित पक्के आहे. त्यातूनही एखाद्या मुलीला त्यात करियर करायचे असेल तर किती अडचणी येतात, त्याची आपण कल्पना करु शकतो. मुलगी अजूनही "चूल आणि मूल' हे अजूनही भारतीयांच्या मनात पक्के आहे. त्याला छेद देण्याचा प्रयत्न चित्रपटात करण्यात आला आहे. इतकेच नव्हे तर नामांकित क्रिकेटपटू त्याच्या हॉकीपटू प्रेयसीला किती तुच्छतेने वागवितो, ते देखील अत्यंत चपखलपणे चित्रित करण्यात आले आहे.

भारताचा संघ तयार करताना आंध्रप्रदेश, दिल्ली, महाराष्ट्र, काश्‍मीर, पंजाब, झारखंड या प्रांतांप्रमाणेच मिझोरम आणि मणिपूर या ईशान्येच्या राज्यांमधील खेळाडूचांही भारतीय संघात आवर्जून समावेश करण्यात आला आहे. झारखंड या प्रांताबद्दलचे अज्ञान, मिझोरम व मणिपूरमधील खेळाडूंना परदेशी नागरिकांप्रमाणे मिळणारी वागणूक व खेळाडूंनी ओळख करुन देताना स्वतःला फक्त राज्यापुरते सिमीत ठेवणे आदी छोट्या छोट्या प्रसांगांमधून चित्रपट प्रेक्षकांवर चांगली पकड निर्माण करतो.

संघबांधणी करताना खेळाडूंचे हेवेदावे, वरिष्ठ-कनिष्ठ वाद, खेळाडूंची "पोझिशन' अशा अनेक गोष्टींमुळे निर्माण झालेले तंटे सोडविण्याचे कबीर खानचे कसब वाखाणण्याजोगे आहे. प्रत्येक "फॉरवर्ड'ला आपल्या नावावर गोल होण्याची असलेली इच्छा आणि त्यामुळे हातच्या निसटणाऱ्या संधी हे काही नवीन नाही. पण "तुम्ही पुढे गेला नाहीत तरी चालेल पण चेंडू पुढे गेला पाहिजे,' अशा एकेका वाक्‍यातून कबीरने दिलेले धडे प्रेक्षकांच्या टाळ्या मिळवितात. कर्णधारपदावरून वरिष्ठ खेळाडूंचे प्रशिक्षकासमवेत उडणारे खटके आणि बहिष्काराचे अस्त्र, प्रायोजकांअभावी महिलांच्या संघाऐवजी पुरुषांच्या संघाला विश्‍वकरंडक स्पर्धेसाठी पाठविण्याचा हॉकी महासंघाचा हट्ट, कर्णधार होण्यासाठी प्रशिक्षकाशी शरीरसंबंध ठेवण्यास तयार होणारी वरिष्ठ खेळाडू हे प्रसंग सत्यपरिस्थितीची दाहकता दाखवून देतात. अखेरीस पंजाब, सिंध, गुजरात, मराठा, द्राविड, उत्कल, वंग अशा भारताच्या कानाकोपऱ्यातून आलेल्या महिला खेळाडूंची मोट बांधण्यात कबीर खान यशस्वी होतो.

प्रत्यक्ष सामन्यांवेळी भारतीय खेळाडूंना येणारी इंग्रजी भाषेची व त्यामुळे संवादाची अडचण, ऑस्ट्रेलियाचे "लॅपटॉप' प्रशिक्षक आणि डोक्‍यात रणनिती तयार करणार कबीर खान यांच्यातील फरक, निर्णायक सामन्यातही संघापेक्षा वैयक्तिक गोलसंख्येला अधिक महत्त्व देणारे खेळाडू आणि कोऱ्या करकरीत हॉकी स्टिक्‍स, बूट व टी-शर्ट पाहिल्यानंतर भारतीय खेळाडूंना होणारा आनंद या गोष्टी खूपच सूचक आणि सत्य परिस्थितीदर्शक आहेत.

ऑस्ट्रेलियाविरुद्धचा अंतिम सामना "पेनल्टी शूटआऊट'मध्ये जातो. तेव्हा पाय आणि हॉकी स्टीक हलविण्याच्या ऑस्ट्रेलियन खेळाडूच्या कृतीवरुन ती चेंडू कुठे मारणार हे आधीच ओळखून गोलरक्षकाला इशारा करणारा कबीर खान (म्हणजेच मीररंजन नेगी) हॉकीचा किती सखोल अभ्यासक आहे, हे दाखविण्यात आले आहे.

तुम्ही क्रीडाप्रेमी असा किंवा नसा, हॉकी तुम्हाला आवडत असो किंवा नसो पण हा चित्रपट जरुर पहा. एकदा नव्हे तर दोनदा-तीनदा पहा. तुम्हीच पाहू नका तर इतरांनाही चित्रपट पाहण्याची विनंती करा. त्यानिमित्ताने का होईना पण क्रिकेटवेड्यांच्या देशात हॉकी या राष्ट्रीय खेळाची तोंडओळख होईल. हॉकीला आयुष्य वाहणाऱ्या धनराजसारख्या हॉकीपटूंची उपेक्षा करणे किती मोठे पाप आहे, याची पुसटशी जाणीव होईल.

Hockey lose, Archery gains!!!

Sports Ministry's decision to drop hockey from the priority list might have caught everyone by surprise, but the government's grant to the federation has been steadily cut over last three years. Indian Hockey Federation received Rs. 194.21 lakh in 2004-05 but there was a drastic cut the following year and the federation got only Rs. 96.46 lakh from the government purse for promotion of the game in the country. The amount went down further to Rs. 92.09 lakh in the last financial year (2006-07).

The information was revealed by Sports Minister Mani Shankar Aiyar who gave details of the financial assistance provided to sports federations while answering a question in Rajya Sabha today. The government supplements the efforts of the national sports federations by providing assistance for training and participation or coaching of teams abroad, and procurement of equipments.

Hockey is not alone as some important sports federations have heavily lost on government funding in the last three years. The weightlifting federation, which faced two international bans in two years for doping offences, has been the worst hit. From Rs. 79.88 lakh in 2004-05, and Rs. 51.41 in 2005-06, the grant has come down to a meagre Rs. 3.28 lakh in the last financial year (2006-07).

Athletics, the mother of all sports, was also not spared. In fact, the Athletics Federation of India took the biggest hit with the grants coming down from Rs. 227.95 lakh in 2005-06 to Rs. 86.83 lakh last season, a fall of Rs. 141.12 lakh. The case with All India Football Federation, which has also been dropped from the priority category, is not different. The AIFF got Rs. 119.36 lakh in 2004-05 but could manage only 70.37 the next season. It further went down to 30.55 lakh in the last year. All India Tennis Association got 136.87 lakh in 2004-05 while the grant came down to 90.07 lakh in 2006-07.

The assistance to shooting which got India bulk of the medals in Commonwealth Games and Asian Games was increased from Rs. 218.37 lakh 2004-05 to Rs. 433 lakh next year but fell to Rs. 373.19 lakh in 2006-07. But the picture is rosy for some other federations like Table Tennis Federation of India and Archery Association of India. On the back of some commendable international performance, TTFI's grants have been rising steadily. Form 116.78 lakh in 2004-05, the grants have gone up to 178.75 lakh in 2006-07. Archery's purse was got a hike to 96.48 lakh last year, from 58.95 lakh in 2004-05.
